Bal Mitra Ganeshotsav Mandal(Regd.) – The Story of Faith, Unity & Legacy
A Humble & Sacred Beginning in Kisan Nagar Rooted in Devotion
In the early 1970s, Kisan Nagar in Thane was a small settlement, home to barely 100–125 residents. Situated near Mulund and on the outskirts of Mumbai, this humble locality was rooted in simplicity, unity, and strong cultural values. Life was simple, and resources were limited, but the spirit of togetherness was strong.
It was during those formative years that a group of local residents came together to initiate community gatherings with a shared vision—to create a platform that would promote faith, unity, and social awareness. This vision led to the formation of Bal Mitra Mandal, initially centered around organizing public Satyanarayan Mahapuja ceremonies. What began as a modest spiritual practice soon ignited a deeper sense of devotion among the younger generation.
Inspired by the ideals and the vision of Bal Gangadhar Lokmanya Tilak, who championed public celebrations as a means of social unity and who transformed Ganesh Utsav into a movement of social awakening, the mandal evolved beyond religious practices, and a group of enthusiastic youths from the area envisioned organizing a public Ganesh festival. It became a powerful medium for community bonding, cultural expression, and social change.

The Birth of a Cultural Movement (1976)
1976-1980
The vision came to life in 1976, when the first-ever Ganeshotsav was celebrated under the leadership of Mr. Devendra Shankar Karekar, the founding अध्यक्ष (President) of Bal Mitra Ganeshotsav Mandal — marking the beginning of a legacy that would grow far beyond imagination.
The first idol of Lord Ganesha was sculpted by Mr. Shankar Karekar, marking the beginning of a cherished tradition. Initially, the festival was celebrated for five days, but with growing participation from residents and youth, it quickly evolved into a larger and more vibrant community event.
The unwavering support of senior members such as Devendra Shankar Karekar, Vasant Fatarfekar, Nitin Patki, Keshav Satoskar, Suresh Mistri, Mangesh Mistri, Shivaji Chalke, Acharekar, and Chandrakant Kude played a crucial role in shaping the festival into a well-organized public celebration that combined devotion with knowledge-sharing and cultural awareness.
What began as a small 5-day celebration gradually evolved into a grand festival that united generations through:
-
Devotional practices
-
Cultural performances
-
Community engagement initiatives
1981-1996
Between 1981 and 1982, the responsibility of crafting the Ganesha idol was undertaken by renowned Mumbai-based sculptors, including Mr. Satyavan Kamble, Master Dinanath Veling, and Mr. Vijay Khatu, further enhancing the artistic and spiritual appeal of the festival.
Over the years, the मंडळ (mandal/committee) witnessed strong leadership. Mr. Richard Anthony and Mr. Prashant Kambli served as Presidents during this period, followed by Mr. Ramdas Bahiru Hadvale, who led the मंडळ from 1996 to 2008. Under his leadership, a defining milestone was achieved in 1996, when celebrated sculptor Mr. Rajan Vitthal Zhad began crafting the Ganesh idol—a tradition that continues to this day, with his masterful artistry bringing to life the majestic and grand form of “Maharaja.”
1996-2001
A landmark moment came in 2001, during the मंडळ’s (Mandal's) Silver Jubilee year, when a magnificent 25-foot-tall idol of Lord Ganesha seated on Garuda was created—an extraordinary spectacle and the only one of its kind in the entire Thane District at the time.
Originally known as “Balmitra Ganeshotsav Mandal,” the organization gradually earned immense popularity and recognition, eventually becoming widely known as “THANYACHA MAHARAJA Mandal” (The Maharaja of Thane)—a name that reflects its grandeur and deep cultural significance.
2009-2015
From 2009 to 2011, Mr. Dinesh Kantilal Makwana served as President, bringing in a wave of young energy by actively encouraging youth participation. This momentum continued under Mr. Deepak Vijay Vetkar, who led the मंडळ (Mandal) from 2012 to 2015, fostering social responsibility and expanding community-driven initiatives that empowered young talent and promoted cultural engagement.
2016
In 2016, Mr. Ravindra Sadanand Phatak was appointed President, with Mr. Deepak Vijay Vetkar & Dr. Abhijeet Babu Panchal as Vice Presidents. Their tenure marked a new chapter of inclusivity and large-scale participation, with numerous public मंडळs (Mandals) and volunteers joining hands. Together, they strengthened the organization’s commitment to society by organizing diverse religious, cultural, and social programs with great enthusiasm.
During the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021), the मंडळ (Mandal) emerged as a pillar of support for the community. Despite personal risks, its dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly across Thane, extending help to thousands of citizens in need. Whether it was providing essential supplies or emotional support, the मंडळ (Mandal) stood firm—like a banyan tree—offering strength, stability, and hope during one of the most challenging times in recent history.
